Coach Jack Williams
Jack Williams has spent the last fifteen seasons (2003 - present) in various coaching capacities at Downey High School. He was the Junior Varsity Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator in 2003 and was promoted to the Varsity coaching staff in 2004, serving as Defensive Coordinator, Offensive Coordinator, Running Backs', Defensive Backs' and Quarterbacks' Coaches until 2009, when he began his tenure as Varsity Head Coach. Before coming to Downey, Williams coached at Azusa Pacific University, his alma mater, where in 2001 he worked with the running backs. Coach Williams prepped at Downey High School, where he littered in football, basketball and baseball. He attended Long Beach City College from 1996-1997 and was named a Junior All-American in football. He then played for Brigham Young University from 1997-1998 before playing at Azusa Pacific University ("APU") from 1998-2000. At APU williams was a two-time All-American, NAIA Junior Heisman winner and Player of the Year, as well as the Offensive and Defensive MVP of the 1998 NAIA National Championship game. In 2000, he was selected to play in the Hula Bowl All-Star game and then went on to sign with the Oakland Raiders as a free agent. Williams played for the NFL Europe Tyrolean Raiders before sustaining injuries that ended his playing career. In 2013, he was inducted into the APU Athletics Hall of Fame. Since he has taken over as Head Coach of the Downey Vikings, the majority of his graduating seniors matriculate at four-year universities and junior colleges around the nation. His former athletes are currently playing college football at USC, Whittier College, the University of Oregon, New Mexico State University, Washington State University, Greenville University, Robert Morris University, Fresno State, New Mexico, John Hopkins, Navy and Cal Poly Slo. Other former athletes have played college football at Fresno State, Greenville University and Western New Mexico University. In his eight seasons as Head Coach, Williams has led the viking to seven victories over rival Warren, eight San Gabriel League Valley championship titles, and two CIF final games with the Vikings winning the 2012 CIF CHampionship. Coach Williams holds a BS in sociology and a MA in Special Education and is currently a special education math teacher at Downey High School. He runs youth football camps and travels with his family during the summers. He is dedicated to "Building Men for Others" among st his football players and all youth of the Downey community. He and his wife, Teresa, a Downey High School English teacher, reside in Cypress with their seven-year old son, Ethan, and four-year old daughter, Quinn. If you are paying close attention to the Downey sideline you will see Ethan and Quinn giving their Viking players a "tap, tap" on their helmets before the games and grooving with the DHS Cheerleaders to the DHS Band throughout games.
Coach Thomas Hollington
Assistant Head Coach Defensive Coordinator
Coach Huntington is entering his third season at as Varsity assistant head coach and his first season at Varsity defense coordinator. coach has coached at Downey High School for the past 7 years with coach Williams and brings over 13 years of coaching experience at Downey High School. coach Huntington graduated from Paloma Valley High School in 2003, where he lettered three years in football and four years in track and field. He then went to attend Azusa Pacific University where he graduated in 2007 after playing football for one year and Rugby for 4 years. For the past 6 years, coach Williams has been teaching house at Downey High School. coach Huntington has been married for 10 years to his wife, choleen, who works in the district as an Adaptive PE teacher and they had their first child, Thomas Huntington,IV, in February 2015
Coach Irwin Benjamin
Coach Benjamin is entering his second year as a Varsity Corner coach at Downey High School and his first season coaching High School football. dunbar high school in 2001, coach Benjamin was an All-State running back. he graduated high school in 2002 and went on to attend the University of Oregon where he majored in history and minored in kinesiology. While playing at the University of Oregon, he was a third Team All-Pac 10 defensive back. In 2002, coach Benjamin begin teaching High School football at Mooring Side High School where he was the defensive DB coach. in 2015, he became defensive coordinator and running backs coach at Maiya and Jello High School and then became a coach at Downey High School. Coach Benjamin the proud parent of four wonderful kids, Trenton, age 11, Gerald, Age 10: Cameron, Age 7, and Aubery, Age 1, He is a world champion at goldfish and his favorite NFL team is the Denver Broncos
Coach Mike Gutierrey
Coach Mike is entering his third season as a varsity safetie’s coach at Downey High School and it is his 12th season coaching High School football. coach Mike began his passion for football as a 3-year Letterman at Alhambra High School followed by a season of football at East Los Angeles College. coach Mike has been humble by the opportunity to continue coaching football at the well respected Downey High School academic and athletic program. as a special education instructor at Columbus High School, coach Mike is driving to become a special education teacher and have a long and successful career with Downey Unified School District. coach Mike hopes to be a mentor for all young student Athletics.
Expectations of our Student Athletes
As a Downey HIgh School student athlete you are required to represent, uphold, and practice the principles of Victory with Honor. This program is based on the "Six Pillars of Character" of the Character Counts Program that is practiced district wide. As part of a Viking athletic team you will be required to maintain a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 and be looked as a model of student discipline. You will be asked to participate in fundraising efforts on campus and in the local community. The effort of the coaches is to instill and nurture the concepts of responsibility, discipline and teamwork in each student athlete.
Coach Daniel Falkenstein
Wide Receiver Coach/Associate Head Coach
Coach Falkenstein will be entering his second year as the wide receiver’s coach and Associated head coach at Downey High School. Prior to coming to Downey, coach Falkenstein served as the defensive back’s coach and special teams coordinator for Pacifica High School, the Offensive coordinator at Godinez High School (2004), Offensive coordinator at Marina High School (2013), and Defensive coordinator at Marina high school (2011-2013). Before joining the high school coaching ranks, coach Falkenstein coached outside linebackers at Lindenwood university in st. Charles Missouri. Coach Falkenstein Is an a l u m n u s of Marina High School( Class of 2004), Carnegie Mellon University( class of 2010). Coach Falkenstein played inside and outside linebacker at Carnegie mellon University while he earned his Bachelor's in science in economics. what coaching at lindenwood University, he received a Masters in Business Administration. Coach Falkenstein and his wife, Dalise Lindsay Falkenstein, are proud parents of their daughter, Dixie and their son, Duck and their two dogs, Libby and Daphne.
Coach Anthony Valenzuela
Strength and Conditioning Coach
Coach Anthony is a varsity strength and conditioning coach at Downey High School and is a freshman head coach. coach Anthony was born and raised in Los Angeles where you graduated in 1997 from cathedral High School.Well attending cathedral High School, he lettered in both football and baseball. After High School, coach Anthony acquired his football coaching and strength and conditioning experience through his association with the Lakewood Pop Warner organization, Los Alamitos Pop Warner, Cathedral High School, Roybal High School and Downey High School. aside from coaching at Downey High School he is also part owner at his family-run business, M&A Smash and Door. Coach Anthony is married to his wife, lilia, and they have a son Anthony Christopher Venezuela. Coach Anthony is a very proud and excited to be part of the Downey football staff and looks forward to a great 2017 football season.
Coach Justin Alegria
Coach Justin is entering his fourth season as the Varsity Quarterbacks' Coach and his second year as Offensive Coordinator at Downey High School and it is his twelfth season coaching football overall. Coach Justin previously coached at Cathedral, Alhambra, Marshall, Soto Mayor, Temple City, and Marshall High Schools. Coach Justin is a 2006 graduate of Cathedral High School, where he lettered all four years as the quarterback of the Varsity football team. Coach Justin currently is employed at Columbus High School while he continues to pursue his degree to one day become a teacher, Overall Coach Justin hopes to positively impact as many children's lives as possible through the platform of football.
